Who Else Wants To Know About Childrens Books Publishing?
One way or another, almost all of my skills as a writer, as well as my inspirations, start with childhood. It was my mom, most of all, who got me interested in writing in the first place. She would read children's books to me, and encourage me to write stories of my own. I have been writing ever since. It did not, however, occur to me to write children's books until I had kids of my own. If I had not had the experience of reading to them, I would never have found a childrens books publishing company to publish my stories.
You see, having kids is like a free workshop in writing children's books. Like the rest of the writing industry, childrens books publishing is very market driven. They want to publish what will sell, and that means what will please parents, teachers, and most of all, kids. Long before I had even written my first childrens book, I began to try out some of my ideas on my kids. I would make up little bedtime stories for them, and see how they reacted. Soon, I began to understand their tastes, and adjust my style accordingly. Soon, I had several completed manuscripts ready to be sent to a childrens books publishing house.
A lot of people say that it is every bit as hard to write a childrens book as it is to write one for adults, but for me it was very easy. I guess that all of the practice with my kids helped me out, but really there was not a lot to it. Basically, what it comes down to is that you have to be able to think like a kid. Childrens books publishing is partially about pleasing the adult, but that is the easy part. The hard part is to figure out how to write a story that kids will enjoy. Being around kids makes this easy.
If you have never tried out childrens books publishing, I would recommend it. Not everyone can write a novel that is any good, but I believe that almost anyone can write a kids book. You do not need to know that much about characterization, or description. Childrens books publishing only requires the most rudimentary plot. Really, all that you need to be a children's book author is an audience. Kids can be some of the toughest critics. If you can win them over, you can thrill anyone.
