How To Write The Perfect Cover Letter
It is quite simple to send out a resume in applying for a job. In fact, it is also simple to just fill out a job application. But, writing the cover letter can become much more challenging. Afterall, the cover letter is what you use to capture a potential employer's attention and introduce yourself. A cover letter is of utter importance for selling yourself to an employer.
You should not have a generic cover letter that you send to each employer. It should be individualized for every position you are applying for. A cover letter is basically an advertisement for yourself and that's what you need to do - convince your employer that they should request an interview. Your personality and goals should be evident in your cover letter, along with your enthusiasm for the position or career in which you are inquiring.
As a supervisor who has done my share of hiring and interviewing, I can say that I have seen some powerful and horrible cover letters in my time. It is the cover letter that tells me everything that I need to know in a few simple paragraphs that captures my attention. I don't need to know about things in someone's life that do not pertain to applying for a job. Don't share personal information for hopes of sympathy or pity because it will not get you hired. Be professional and businesslike in all paragraphs. The worst mistake I see over and over again is words being misspelled. Apparently, quite a few people out there do not read over what they have written before sending it on its way. If a word is not spelled correctly, you are not getting an interview. It is as simple as that. If your cover letter is grammatically horrible, I will put it in my trash can. I want to see a cover letter that is formatted correctly and there are no obvious mistakes. If you are truly serious about your job search, you will have taken the extra time to check over your cover letter. Don't just hope that no one will notice, because we do.
I want a cover letter to grab my attention by telling me about your qualities that will be an asset to my company. Your cover letter should tell me what you can do for me, not how getting a job in my company will help you out. Sell yourself in your cover letter. Just do yourself a favor and take a few moments to read over your cover letter before you mail it.
